To understand and meet the growing needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and allied senior community in the Western Suburbs through outreach and programming delivered with knowledge, sensitivity, and pride and a strong commitment to promoting social justice and equality.
Since July of 2012, WSSS has offered targeted services and support to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) seniors 55 and up to meet an identified need for LGBT specific programming. The West Suburban LGBT Seniors Program addresses the needs of LGBT Seniors by offering outreach; socialization; health education; education on local, state, and federal programs for seniors; case management; mental health counseling; and regular weekly and monthly programming. The LGBT Seniors program began with 13 seniors in the summer of 2012 and now has nearly 100 participants.
Beginning in January of 2013, the LGBT Program began to offer free case management and mental health counseling to program participants. Because many LGBT seniors have experienced discrimination from mainstream providers or have a fear of discrimination, they often are hesitant to reveal their sexual orientation, trust mainstream aging providers, and seek needed services. The goal of the WSSS LGBT Seniors Program is to provide a safe and affirming space where participants can get the information and assistance they need to maintain well-being and health.
