Research on Older Adults with HIV
AIDS Community Research Initiative Mark Brennan, PhD
Stephen E. Karpiak, PhD, (ACRIA)
Marjorie H. Cantor, Professor Emerita and Brookdale Distinguished Scholar,
Graduate School of Social Service, Fordham University. Adults 50 and older account for 27% of the US population with HIV (CDC, 2007). ACRIA conducted the largest study to date of the needs, quality of life, and psychosocial issues affecting persons over 50 living with HIV, Research on Older Adults with HIV (ROAH; Karpiak et al., 2006; N=1000). This symposium will examine similarities and differences between LGBT and heterosexual people living with HIV in three key areas essential for successful aging; health and comorbidities, social supports, and spirituality. Implications for policy and practice will be presented to assist health and social service providers to meet the needs of this emerging population.
Research on colonoscopy screenings in LGB community
Dr. Jack Burkhalter, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Assistant Attending Psychologist
M. Somjen Frazer, MLitt, Community Epidemiology, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
Dr. Yuelin Li, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
Shannon Farley, MPH, Community Epidemiology, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
Research suggests that LGB people have more risk factors for cancer and are less likely to get screened. Colorectal cancer screening (CRCS) starting at age 50 can detect pre-cancerous adenomas and early-stage cancer, minimizing disease burden and preventing premature death. This presentation will focus on colonoscopy screening among lesbians, gay men and people with same-sex partners, examining risk factors for non-adherence to screening guidelines.
