Be a SAGE Voter: Have Your Voice Heard This Election
Election Day 2024 is quickly approaching. Do you have a voting plan? Before you hit the polls, make sure you have all the information you need to make informed decisions.
According to the Human Rights Campaign, by 2030, one in seven (14.3%) voters will identify as LGBTQ+, and by 2040, one in five (17.8%) voters will be part of the LGBTQ+ community. Now is the time to show that our community understands the power and the privilege of voting.
This election season, many issues that directly affect our community are at stake, including caregiving needs, social security, Medicare protections, and LGBTQ+ rights. Uphold the legacy of our LGBTQ+ elders by making your voice heard this election day.
LGBTQ+ Elders Respond: Why Vote?
“One reason I’m voting is because our democracy faces an existential threat. I’m voting because civil rights, LGBTQ+, and women’s rights will be eliminated. Women deserve the right to control their bodies. I’m voting to protect the LGBTQ+ community, interracial marriages, health care, and the laws already enacted to grant rights necessary to allow all people to live lives without regret. As an elder, I want my younger community to have the same rights I have lived with. My singular vote may not make a difference; however, millions of singular votes can.” – Lujira Cooper
“We have come a long way since Black Cat in Los Angeles and Stonewall in New York. In today’s day and age, we can choose to support the LGBTQ+ community by voting. Things have changed, and yet, some stayed the same. To vote is action in motion. On a lighter note, if I don’t vote, how can I honestly whine and complain about the outcome?” – Rodolfo Romero
Project 2025: Understanding The Consequences for LGBTQ+ Elders
If Project 2025 comes to fruition, the effects would be devastating for not only LGBTQ+ people, but also BIPOC communities, women, immigrants and asylum seekers, educators, children, elders, and many others in our country. The policies proposed will put LGBTQ+ elders in significant danger and would affect aging services and supports, housing, and healthcare. To keep our community informed, SAGE has clearly outlined these policies and the effects they would have.
