New Orleans Organization Joins SAGE, Local Organization Serving LGBTQ+ Older People Joins National Network of Affiliates
[New Orleans, LA] Beginning this month, New Orleans Advocates for GLBT Elders (NOAGE) joins SAGE’s national affiliate network as SAGE New Orleans. SAGE is the world’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ+ elders, with over 30 affiliates across the country and Puerto Rico.SAGE New Orleans was formed in response to the increasing needs of LGBTQ+ older adults in the New Orleans area. From its earliest days, the organization has looked to SAGE’s programming and services in New York and other locations as a model to help address loneliness and isolation that many LGBTQ+ people face as they age. SAGE New Orleans hosts recurring socialization events such as coffee talks, support groups, potlucks, movie nights, and fitness groups, all of which are still being hosted virtually in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis.
“SAGE New Orleans is a great example of how SAGE affiliates across the country are hard at work providing vital support and connection for LGBTQ+ elders, especially during this critical time,” said SAGE CEO Michael Adams. “Their programs and services have made a lasting effect on our LGBTQ+ pioneers in the New Orleans area, and we are looking forward to seeing the incredible work they will continue to do in the future.”
In addition to hosting socialization events for LGBTQ+ older adults, SAGE New Orleans works to increase the cultural competency of healthcare and other service providers through trainings and workshops, including SAGECare training from Executive Director of SAGE New Orleans Jim Meadows. SAGE New Orleans is committed to ensuring that all LGBTQ+ older people in the New Orleans metro area can live their best lives with the dignity, respect, and good health that they deserve.
