 In: Articles

Meet Patrick LaVergne (he/him), one of SAGE’s incredible volunteers! Patrick joined SAGE last summer in 2024. You may have seen him in the kitchen at our Edie Windsor SAGE Center preparing meals for celebratory events like the “Pride Party” and “Summer Social.” He also assists with escorting SAGE members to errands and medical appointments. Thank you for all that you do, Patrick!

1. What does volunteering at SAGE USA mean to you?

“Volunteering at SAGE has given me a sense of belonging and connected me with older LGBTQ+ members who might have faced tough times. It has allowed me to give back to a segment of a community that’s always been a big part of my life. Working with SAGE has kept me active and engaged in the aging community, helped me make new friends, and strengthen old relationships. Overall, it’s been a rewarding way to enrich both my life and the lives of others. Looking ahead, I hope to start a monthly art therapy-based group session to encourage creativity and social engagement among the members.”

2. How did you first hear of SAGE USA?

“Through a close, personal friend who is also a long-time volunteer for SAGE USA.”

3. How has your experience volunteering with our older adult members enriched your understanding of LGBTQIA+ community?

“My experience with SAGE has gently shifted my perspective, helping me develop a more inclusive and compassionate view of aging within the LGBTQ+ community. Witnessing the diverse and vibrant lives of senior SAGE members has deepened my commitment to advocating for their visibility and respect in the broader community.”

4. What is your favorite part about volunteering with SAGE?
“I love connecting with the community, whether it’s working alongside other volunteers or meeting SAGE members at the events I help with.”

5. How do you balance volunteering with SAGE and other parts of your life?
“SAGE offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities with flexible days, times, and schedules, so it’s easy to find something that works with my (or anyone’s) busy schedule.”

6. How can others get involved?
“It’s super easy to get involved! Just click here. It’s a great way to see all the different ways you can give back.”
